Well here it is another week shot. I did get the top row of block from the concrete slab to the asphalt filled with concrete and the caps put back on. The county came today and gave me a final on the wall. Went to the truss Co. and paid for the engineering ,will pick up tomorrow. Alex, the Gazabo Engineer, did call today with some questions, at least he is working on the plans. It seems as though we have had a pretty good week in the canteen. Thursday's Wam -Bam Bingo had a additional surprise. I took the 35 leftover envelopes from the Queen of Hearts and sold them for a dollar ea. I had recorded the numbers that were on the envelopes and made tags with the numbers on them. I pulled a number from the hat, if you had the matching envelope you opened it. The first one to find a joker won the $35.oo. We did a second round looking for the other Joker. The winner received a 24 carat pen with a retail value of $149.00. Well I did not call for the final on the wall. After looking at the caps on the wall there were several that were loose ,caused by a little kiss from the tractor. I deceided to remove and redo them. It will require about 28 bags of 60lb sackcrete. I still have yet to hear back from the engineer, will be calling him again tomorrow. The first part of the week ,in general was flat, Thursday was a good day. Friday's hunt for the Queen came to a halt when Lowell picked envelope #12 and the Queen came crawling out. We will be starting the next game with a $1,000.00 reward Jokers worth $50.00. After dinner the band rocked the house. Saturday the hall was rented out for a private party, the canteen had a very good day. The NASCAR race had one of the most exciting finishes of the year The big winners were Jeanie for $125.00 dollars, and her first points of the season, Japana came in 2nd for $75.00 and 10 points. Bella and San Jose [John] won the $1.00 boards for $40.00 ea. Don't forget election will be this Thursday.Well it looks like all the hard work on the retaining wall has come to an end The backfill was completed an the final grading was finished before the Patroit's run on Saturday. Today Joyce and I put a end on the wall by the driveway and bought some flowers to plant . I had placed some Ice Plant and Dave planted some Rose Bushes earlier in the week Will be calling for a final later in the week. Hope to hear from the Engineer by Friday. Ordered supplies on Monday in preparation for the weekend. The rest of the week was kind of bland. Same old free lunch and Wham-Bam Bingo on Thursday Friday's Sheriff duties went to Jeff, his pick was envelope #4 which housed the 7 of Clubs. This weeks reward will be $7,700.00. Come on down on Friday and try your luck. We will be having live music after the draw for April Birthdays. Saturday was a kick ass day with the Patriots hosting there annual run. The day went real smooth and Scott did a whale of a job on the BBQed Chicken, the best I have had in a long time. The rest of the weekend was rather boring with no NASCAR race. I have posted some new pictures of the run and the wall. More pictures in the galleryWell Joyce and got the rest of the wall waterproofed on Wednesday Got the OK from the engineer to use the rock that we had. To be safe we installed a sock filter over the pipe so the smaller rock could not get in the holes Got all the pipe placed and some back fill in place in order to contain the rock Today, after the inspector gave us the go, with a lot of help we got the drain rock in and the fabric placed so we could start the fill of the dirt. Will have to bring Charlie in tomorrow to bring some dirt down from up on the hill so we can finish the backfill. Hope to get a chance to contact Alex, the engineer, and try and get the changes approved so we can get the show on the road with the gazebo. Again not much to report on during the first part of the week . Wham-Bam Bingo , as always on Thursday was a lot of fun. Friday's lucky sheriff for the second week in a row was Billy. SAL's fund raiser for the North Montery County girls softball team was was a huge success ,they sold well over 200 dinners. The NASCAR race Saturday night was a thriller The winner was Mike H for $125.oo and 12 points, which gives him the points lead by a bunch. 2nd place went to Dennis for $75.00 and 10 points The winners of the $1.00 games were Marlene and Furball. I still have spots for the Taladega ,I know its not spelled right, available $20.00 buy in pays $500.00 to win, $150.00 for 2nd, $50.00, $50.00 for the car leading at half way, and $50.00 for 15th. This week end should be a great time with the Patriots bike run . Hope to see you all there. Its Tuesday already and I have finally found time to post my blog. I will catch you up on the latest first. Went to Home Depot and picked up the materials for the French Drain. Am having a problem with the drain rock. Called Chapan and gave them the Spec's off from the plans. They delivered 3/8 pea gravel I was expecting 3/4 drain rock. Will have to call the engineer to see if that really was what he wanted. I don't want to put it in and have the inspector tell me it doesn't meet the county spec's. Did coat the south wall this afternoon, hope to have some help tomorrow. The trip to the engineer was more frustrating than helpful He gave me some choices that I will have to put down on paper then try to convince him that they will work Hope he can draw up something to present to the county, all they can say is go back to the drawing board. So much for that. I can't think of anything of any interest that happened Monday, Tuesday, Or Wednesday. WHAM -BAM BINGO on Thursday. Thursday Night was our monthly meeting as well as first round nominations for next years officers. Nominated for Commander Mike Cabael and myself 1st Vice Bob Schreiber Second Vice a new member and I forgot her name .Chaplain Pete , Sargent at Arms Warren Judge Advocate Terry I personally made the announcement that I would be giving up the Bar Managers position at the end of the term as well as I would not be seeking any offices. I will continue with the fund raising and the Gazabo project. Friday night's hunt for the Queen went to Billy and Bernie. Their choice was envelope # 1, no Queen but did uncover a gift card as well as 26 tickets for this coming Friday's draw, which will be $7,000.00. Jokers now worth $175.00. Got the slab poured back to the wall. Due to the weather we have not been able to start on the sealing of the wall, Maybe by the end of the week. Still have yet to hear from the engineer so I can start with the county permit bull-????. Did go to Home Depot and price out the pipe and fitting for the French drain. May get the chance to pick it up later in the week. Have asked a couple of people for a price on the drain rock. Yet to hear anything. I can't believe how slow it has been. I guess everyone is signing up for Obama Care and paying their taxes. As alway's we had a great turn out for WHAM-Bam BINGO on Thursday. Friday's hunt for the Queen has been picking up due to the size of the reward This weeks sheriff selected envelope #21 exposing the 5 of Clubs, again no money but 26 tickets for next week. The AUX 50/50 draw went to Shermon for $102.00. Mark played some great music until about 11:00. Saturday we hosted a fund raiser for 589's ladies AUX. The weather really hurt the turn out for the bike show but the one's that showed were great. The whole day started kind of slow but picked up later. They had a great lunch and some fine music in the afternoon. Overall it was a success and everyone had a great time. Sunday was NASCAR, a very exciting race. Come on down Friday for the Queen now worth $6,700 also we will be having music and Karaoke by "Michelle".Been real busy so running a little late with the post. We got alot done on the wall this week. As of today we have finished the wall itself. We still have to waterproof the back of the wall then install the the drain pipe then the drain rock followed by the fabric then the backfill dirt. Sounds like a lot of work to me. Today started with confirming the time of inspection, between 11:00 and 12:00. Climbed up on the roof to try and figure out why we have no lights on the Flag. Looks like I will have to replace the sensor. Bernie, from the senior center, says their entrance light is out. Guess I will have to look at that too. The inspector showed up straight up 11:00 and gave us a clean bill of health. Chris ordered the pump and the concrete for 1:00. We were going to pour the slab as well as the backfill of the block but due to the weather we chose to wait until Thursday to do the slab. Went shopping for Thursday's free lunch followed by going to White Cap and spending $500.00 on the material to waterproof the wall. Enough of that. Wednesday was the last night for Karaoke for a while. Doug & Bobbie fixed a great dinner, again the last one on Wed's for a while. Thursday, as always, a great lunch and WHAM-BAM BINGO. Friday we had officers of AREA 2 join us for dinner and stay to enjoy the entertainment after the Queen draw. Big Mike won the AUX. 50/50 for $77.00. Saturday was the Area 2 meeting, everything went very smoothly, had several officers come to me and say that they were impressed with the preparation and the lunch that was made available. Sunday was kind of flat, not many people got out of the sack for breakfast. The NASCAR race ended up kind of crazy but interesting . Winners for the week were First for $125.00 and 12 points went to Larry Ash 2nd went to my buddy Deli Bob. Warren and Lou won the $1.00 boards for $40.00 ea. Joyce & I got 7 points to stay in the overall points race. Come out on Saturday and support the fundraiser for 589's AUX. Marc will be spinning records after the Queen on Friday.Well it has been a very dull but stress full week. Our contractor got the stiches out of his leg and was back on the job Tuesday. Finished up the 1st lift on the wall on Wednesday and was able to call for inspection for Thursday morning. After inspection called for the concrete and made arrangements for a pump. Got started back on the wall about noon on Friday. The contractor informed me that he got a notice for jury duty on Monday so they were going to work on Saturday. Wednesday they were ready for me to call for the 2nd lift inspection for Thursday The canteen has been real slow on the night shift. Thursday ,as always was a good day, free lunch and WHAM-BAM Bingo. Friday we actually had a good day as well as night shift. Larry Ash was the lucky Sheriff for the second time in two weeks. His choice of envelopes this week was #17, out jumped the 10 of Clubs, no money but 20 ticket's for next weeks reward of $6,000.00 We will also draw for $100.00 dollar in cash. Saturday night was" March Birthday Celebration" Music was provided by "Mambo Wally", could of had a better turnout, but everyone that did had a great time. Sunday was the ALR meeting and the NASCAR marathon. The race started at 10 and after several rain delays finished at about 7:30. Mike got 2nd for $75.00 and 10 points, he also won one of the dollar boards for $40.00. Jeanie won the other dollar board. I posted some new pictures in the Gallery of the construction project. Hope to have some news on the engineering for the Gazebo next week. Till then come on down and check out our progressI'm not sure how this Blog is going to go. It's has been the most stressful week that I have had since I have been a member. You add the stress of no work on the wall, along with the building Dept. possible wanting fire sprinklers in the gazebo, you add the need for a structural engineer to design something that has worked fine for 30 years, plus as bar manager I have got to resolve some possible problems that may be happening with the volunteer help. I'm not thru yet, I still have to prepare for the Area 2 meeting that will be here on the 22nd & 23rd. Well I do see some light at the end of the tunnel. It really has not helped my head ach but I will get over it. The structural engineer called me today and I have a meeting with him on Wed. He seems to have a fairly simple solution to the problem that should satisfy the county. My contractor had his I'V bag removed from his leg on Friday and will be getting the stiches out on Monday, hopes to be back on the job on Tuesday. Talked to some one from the Area 2 people and it seems that this meeting will be only for Legion Officers not AUX & SAL maybe 50 people. OK back to what has happened at the Post this week. Placed our orders on Monday put them away on Tuesday, no big deal. Wednesday's Karaoke only hand 6 singer's we will not be renewing our contract that will be up on April 9th. Thursday is always a good day with free lunch and WHAM -BAM BINGO. Friday's Queen of Hearts draw went to Larry Ash and his pick was envelope 13, to tell you the truth I forgot what card was there, but It was not the Queen. The Reward for Friday will be $5,700.00. After the Queen "the Pocket full of Blues " band did a great job in entertaining the troops. Sunday was District 28 meeting in Seaside , I was nominated for the 2nd Vice position, that I will decline at the next meeting. I had a water board meeting at my house so I did not get to watch the race but I do have the results. I'st place went to Mary for $125.00 and 12 points also she won one of the $1.00 boards for $40.00 2nd place went to Jim & Margit for $75.00 and 10 point. Jim Davis and myself won the second $1.00 board for $40.00. Don't forget we will be having Corn Beef & Cabbage on Friday night and March Birthday celebration on Sat. with Music by "Mambo Wally".Due to the weather and the fact that my contractor is still down with the infection in his leg, there's not much to report on the wall. I did meet with a structural engineer in Seaside to get some help on the necessary specs. on getting a permit for the Gazebo. Haven't heard back from him. Monday, Tuesday and even Wednesday was not very eventful. Thursday was a good day with lunch and WHAM-BAM Bingo. Friday was a very good day for the canteen, starting with the Queen of Hearts draw. We had two real lucky people. Dave and Linda were drawn for the second time in two weeks to try and capture the Queen. Their pick this week was envelope #50 and the card inside was the 4 of Hearts. Next weeks reward will be $5,400.00. Our second draw for the $100.00 went to Ashley Clausen. You won't believe who won the AUX 50/50 draw for $94.00-none other than Ashley Clausen. When you are on a roll you are on a roll. The band "VYBE" kept the house rockin' till close to midnight. Everyone had a great time. Saturday night Randy had the house jumpin' for Jeanie's birthday. Sunday's NASCAR race winners were Japanna for $125.00 and 12 points. Mary second for $75.00 and 10 points. The dollar games winners were Bella and Joyce & Larry for $40.00 ea. We have a Blues band coming down from San Francisco to perform after the Queen draw on Friday night. Hope to see you all there. Don't forget both AUX and LEGION meeting this Thursday. It looks like I made it thru the week without making anyone mad.
Well it seems as though I have succeeded in upsetting some more people with some of the decsions I have made over the last couple of weeks. We have a member that works for a construction company, that was highly perturbed over my choice of concrete suppliers for the project in the back of the main building. I have hired a contractor to do this job and it was his recommendation to use the company I chose. I have also offended some other members with my incentive program that I started to help increase our membership. The program works like this-recruit a new member and get a $10.00 credit on the sweepstakes machines. I realize that the bartenders may have somewhat of an advantage because of their contact with the customers. All members have relatives, friends, neighbors that they can recruit. We have increased the overall membership by between 15 or 20 members. I'm not sure that any of these members will choose to be more than a card carrying member, but I hope to get some new people to help keep this post afloat.
Well you might know as soon as we get started on the wall it starts to rain. Ken got the footings dug in short order on Wed. Thursday, Chris started to set forms for the footings and sure as ???? it started to rain. I hope we can get started on Tuesday this week. I took a set of plans across the street to get a price on the trusses we will need to redo the gazebo but have yet to hear back from them. Friday we did get the permit from the County with no changes. Monday I did make the liquor order for the next two weeks it came late on Tuesday and was put away. We got back on our 1st & 3rd Karaoke schedule on Wed., had a fair amount of singers. Thursdays Wham- Bam Bingo and free lunch was a hit as always. Dave Dolan again donated extra beer chips as well as $20.00 worth of Queen of Hearts tickets. Friday's dinner fixed by the the Riders was very good. After dinner we did our search for the Queen. The lucky pick was Jeff, his pick was envelope #29. It was a close one, it was a red card it-was a Queen, but the wrong one. It was the Queen of Diamonds. Next weeks reward will be $4,500.00. Saturday was slow but again Dave Dolan came to the rescue Saturday night when he came and set up his stereo and partied on down celebrating his birthday. Happy Birthday Dave. Sunday was the Riders day to do breakfast. I understand some of the Riders were upset because I asked them to hold their meeting at the senior center. This was my call and I will call it For the Good of the Legion. The Jam session that took place in the hall all afternoon netted a cool $1,800.00 for the Post. It was a great afternoon of country music and everyone had a great time. Hope to have lots to report next week on the progress of our wall. Till then, stay dry.
Another week has gone by. Not a lot to report. First part of the week was pretty slow. As always we had a good turn out for lunch and Wham-Bam Bingo. Dave Dolan again came thru with extra chips and 20 dollars worth of Queen tickets. Friday Associated Re-Bar delivered our order of R-bar for the wall. I would like to thank them for their donation of $250.00 dollars off of the bill. Dave Clausen was the Sheriff for Friday nights hunt for the Queen. His pick was envelope #31, exposing the little brother, the Jack of Hearts. Close but no cigar. Not a whole lot going on Saturday. SAL had a great Breakfast on Sunday followed by their monthly meeting. The Super Bowl was a dud. A very low turnout for a very disappointing game. It looks like we will get started on the footings tomorrow. The backhoe arrived this afternoon and PG&E confirmed that there are no utilities where we need to dig. We have a Jam session on Sunday that is a memorial for a local long time musician. Come out and pay your respect and enjoy the music. We have a great night planned for Valentine Day, starting with a Prime Rib Dinner for only $12.00 dollars, we will have chicken for those that don't eat meat. At 7:00 we will do our Queen Draw followed by music provided by "Foolish Pleasure". I guess that's all for nowTrying to get back on my weekly schedule of posting my blog the first part of the week. Being that Monday was a holiday, I didn't get to make any of our orders. Wednesday was our regularly scheduled Karaoke night. Again, not much of a turnout. Thursday Victor fixed a great lunch. I want to thank him for his dedication to the Post. We had another great turn out for Wham-Bam Bingo. Dave Dolan made the day with his donations of 4 Blue Chips, 2 Red Chips and $20.00 worth of Queen of Hearts tickets. By the way, the Queen will be worth $4,000.00 Friday the 31st. Neil was the Sheriff for the hunt for the Queen on the 24th. His guess revealed the 4 of Spades, no money, but he did get $20.00 worth of tickets for this next weeks draw. Saturday's Birthday Bash was a "Bust" if we don't start getting a better turnout we may just discontinue them. Sunday's AUX breakfast was great thanks to Karen, Joyce, Randi and the rest of the girls. Monday was a big day. Bob & Detter started taking down the old retaining wall. The boards were a snap but the poles were a different story. Some of the poles were down at least 4 feet. Thank God for Bob's tractor. Once the boards and poles were cleaned up Charlie brought in his truck and they started removing the bank back so that the footings could be dug. A very productive day. Tuesday they finished removing the dirt and hauled all of the scrap to the dump. Later, "Chris" the contractor, came in and made some cuts in the existing concrete to make room for the footings on the south end of the project. Ken also had a meeting with Chris on the placement of the footings. Hope to get started the first of next week. SAL will be fixing their great Hamburgers for Friday nights dinner. Hope to see you there. |
